Parts of Dental Implants
A dental implant is usually made up of three parts. These parts work together to create sturdy replacements for your missing teeth.
The first part of a dental implant is the metal implant or screw. It’s the artificial root that will keep your implant securely in place.
The second part is the abutment. This is usually placed six months after the metal implant. It connects the artificial tooth root with the crown.
The crown is the third part of the dental implant. It is usually made of porcelain to match the look of your other teeth.
Types of Dental Implants
There are two types of dental implants. Known as subperiosteal and endosteal implants, each has its own differences. You should read about each kind to determine what type fits your needs.
Subperiosteal Implants
Subperiosteal implants are typically chosen when you don’t have the needed bone density for a typical implant. These are placed below your gum line, but above your jawbone, rather than being surgically placed into the bone.
These implants are held in place by your own soft tissue. It provides a foundation to fix your artificial teeth to that won’t be damaged the way a jaw bone could.
Subperiosteal implants offer more stability than traditional dentures do. In addition, they tend to come with a shorter recovery time than other methods of dental implants might.
Endosteal implants
Endosteal implants are the most common type of implant technique used in oral surgery. These are the type made up of three parts. In addition, endosteal implants are usually the most successful type of implant.
Unlike a subperiosteal implant, endosteal implants are placed directly in your jawbone. These require a few surgeries to fully place the crown, with the metal screw implant as the most extensive surgery.
The metal screw is made of titanium so your body won’t reject it. It will eventually fuse to your jaw bone and the soft tissue around it will heal.
Although this surgery is successful, it requires extensive recovery time as well as more stipulations to be a candidate.
Dental Implant Options
Depending on how many missing teeth you have, there are different dental implant options that you should choose. As long as you are a candidate for dental implants, you should be able to solve your tooth problems with one of these implant options.
No matter which of these types you need, you’ll be able to find oral surgery in Los Angeles for it fairly easily.
Single Tooth Implants
Single-tooth implants are the most common type of implant that people need to receive. As the name implies, these are the kind typically used when you only need to replace one tooth. If your missing teeth aren’t side-by-side, this is likely the best option for you.
A single-tooth implant is usually done using an endosteal implant. This means that the recovery time for one of these is a few months.
Single-tooth implants aren’t always the best kind of implant. If you have multiple missing teeth, you might find it wise to choose a different kind of implant.
Implant Supported Bridgework
If you’ve lost several teeth in a row, then we’d recommend getting an implant-supported bridge. These are also often referred to as fixed bridges, which means you won’t need to remove them daily the way you do dentures.
A bridge is typically attached to the teeth on either side of the gap, to enhance and stabilize the bridge’s function. However, implant-supported bridgework is used if the span of missing teeth is too big or the teeth on either side aren’t healthy enough to support implants.
Implant bridges are resistant to dental decay, unlike conventional bridges. This makes them a better, more effective choice.
Traditional or All-On-Four Teeth?
If you need to replace your entire upper or lower jaw of teeth, you might be torn between dentures or all-on-four teeth. In this situation, we’d like to highly recommend getting all-on-four teeth.
Unlike dentures, all-on-four teeth are considered permanent tooth restorations. The procedure involves replacing your missing teeth using just four metal implants.
These implants are placed at a forty-five degree angle for two purposes. The first is to ensure support to all of your teeth. The second purpose is to make it so you can avoid the bone-deficient areas of the jaw during oral surgery.
A traditional replacement would involve the placement of six to eight screws. As all-on-four teeth only require four, the procedure is less invasive. This means your recovery period will be much shorter.
In addition, there will be more flexibility in your mouth. This makes it easier to design and place the perfect replacements for your missing teeth!
